Summary

From the award-winning author of the Dreamland series comes a new dark romantic fantasy about a young woman finding hope in her powers of destruction。

The Thief Kingdom is a place hidden within the world of Aadlior。 Many whisper of its existence, but few have found this place, where magic and pleasure abound。 There, the mysterious Thief King reigns supreme with the help of the Mousai, a trio of revered and feared sorceresses。

Larkyra Bassette may be the youngest of the Mousai, but when she sings her voice has the power to slay monsters。 When it’s discovered the Duke of Lachlan is siphoning a poisonous drug from the Thief Kingdom and using it to abuse his tenants, Larkyra is offered her first solo mission to stop the duke。 Eager to prove herself, Larkyra accepts by posing as the duke’s potential bride。 But her plans grow complicated when she finds herself drawn to Lord Darius Mekenna, Lachlan’s rightful heir。 Soon she suspects Darius has his own motivations for ridding Lachlan of the corrupt duke。 Larkyra and Darius must learn to trust each other if there is to be any hope of saving the people of Lachlan—and themselves。

Welcome to the world of Aadilor, where lords and ladies can be murderers and thieves, and the most alluring notes are often the deadliest。 Dare to listen?

What a fun read!Reading the author's notes on the sources of the names she used made it obvious to me just why I had no trouble knowing who was who and where was where, and why they all just made sense - she worked very hard to make it so。The characters were nicely drawn, the plot and setting invited the reader in, and although it's listed as Mousai #1, it didn't work hard to be a cliff-hanger so I felt trapped into buying the next book。I probably will, but this novel stands on its own。 Well don What a fun read!Reading the author's notes on the sources of the names she used made it obvious to me just why I had no trouble knowing who was who and where was where, and why they all just made sense - she worked very hard to make it so。The characters were nicely drawn, the plot and setting invited the reader in, and although it's listed as Mousai #1, it didn't work hard to be a cliff-hanger so I felt trapped into buying the next book。I probably will, but this novel stands on its own。 Well done, E。J。! 。。。more

I actually really loved this book。 I love the relationship she has with not just her sisters but her family。 I love the slow burn romance。 Can’t wait to read about Niya。

I love, love, loved the Bassette sisters and their supportive, and authentic sibling dynamic。 Petty squabbles among themselves never once undermined the support, love, and trust they all have in each other。 I actually used the notes feature on my Kindle for the first time pretty much ever and marked my theories and predictions (pretty much all of which turned out to be wrong, but that was entirely expected) because I was so enthralled by this book and needed to have those notes forever because r I love, love, loved the Bassette sisters and their supportive, and authentic sibling dynamic。 Petty squabbles among themselves never once undermined the support, love, and trust they all have in each other。 I actually used the notes feature on my Kindle for the first time pretty much ever and marked my theories and predictions (pretty much all of which turned out to be wrong, but that was entirely expected) because I was so enthralled by this book and needed to have those notes forever because reasons。 While I don't mind the slow burn of Larkyra and Darius' romance, I would have liked a bit more of a stolen/secret romance between them, rather than just the last few chapters。 As much as it played like a "will they/won't they" when we all knew they would, I wanted to see so much more between them! This book really drew me in and kept my attention。 It's a bit of a break from the dystopian path I was on, so it was refreshing。 Well written, with great character development, I am really looking forward to the next book that's coming out。 This book really drew me in and kept my attention。 It's a bit of a break from the dystopian path I was on, so it was refreshing。 Well written, with great character development, I am really looking forward to the next book that's coming out。 。。。more

Couldn’t put it downI enjoyed the fantasy and imagery the descriptions sparked。 The pace was good and, although more could have been explored with the secondary characters, it gave us enough to look forward to getting to know them better in the next book。

well-written, but everything interesting was crammed into a few chapters at the end, and the rest of the plot is formulaic and pretty boring。 i would, however, be more interested in reading books about the other two sisters -- niya's in particular seems like it has the potential to be a lot more active。 well-written, but everything interesting was crammed into a few chapters at the end, and the rest of the plot is formulaic and pretty boring。 i would, however, be more interested in reading books about the other two sisters -- niya's in particular seems like it has the potential to be a lot more active。 。。。more

Received a free copy of this from a Goodreads giveaway! Thanks!I loved the first half of this book。 The beginning is especially good。 That first chapter。。。 wow! The second half of the book was extremely disappointing, descending into tired YA tropes。The sisters are these Siren-type of magical creatures, and are fascinating and amazing。 I could have done without the entire "first love" story (especially to someone so unworthy)。 Received a free copy of this from a Goodreads giveaway! What a fantastic book!As a lover of fantasy stories and happy endings, this story was a true joy to read。 I greatly enjoyed the main characters; Larkyra is strong and smart, and I love that she’s not afraid to be who she is。 I would absolutely read this again。

Larkyra is the youngest of three sisters who are also strong sorceresses, who are formidable when they work together for their father。 On coming of age at 19 she is sent on her first solo mission。 I love the strong female leads, the fantasy and the interactions between the sisters which is quick and funny but full of love for each other。

I enjoyed the concept of the magic, the camaraderie of the sisters, and how easy it was to follow。 It felt like a great palate cleanser to some of the more difficult reads I have been doing lately。 I want to see more about how the world develops。 What made this nice was the world building wasn't dumped on me like many fantasy books, but that leaves me wanting more in the sequels。 I hope that if the story continues to follow the main character(s), that they aren't reduced to their love interests。 I enjoyed the concept of the magic, the camaraderie of the sisters, and how easy it was to follow。 It felt like a great palate cleanser to some of the more difficult reads I have been doing lately。 I want to see more about how the world develops。 What made this nice was the world building wasn't dumped on me like many fantasy books, but that leaves me wanting more in the sequels。 I hope that if the story continues to follow the main character(s), that they aren't reduced to their love interests。 They seems like fun characters with a lot of history that need to be explored more on their own before being neatly tied up romantically。 The personal conflict was resolved too quickly in my opinion。 19 years of self-hate and blame forgiven after one conversation? I would think the solution would have been revealed much sooner if it was just a miscommunication error, or that there would have been a deeper reaction to realizing what you thought for 19 years and based your life around was wrong。。。 。。。more

I loved the story but in particular it was the characters, namely Larkyra, her sisters, and Darius that fueled that love。 Lark’s witty banter was perhaps my favorite aspect of the whole book。 Plot was a bit predictable at times but for me the wonder of the world E。J。 Mellow created was more than enough to keep things interesting in those moments。 The system of magic in this series is fresh and used tastefully such that it never loses its impact。 The fantasy elements besides the magic also had a I loved the story but in particular it was the characters, namely Larkyra, her sisters, and Darius that fueled that love。 Lark’s witty banter was perhaps my favorite aspect of the whole book。 Plot was a bit predictable at times but for me the wonder of the world E。J。 Mellow created was more than enough to keep things interesting in those moments。 The system of magic in this series is fresh and used tastefully such that it never loses its impact。 The fantasy elements besides the magic also had a very unique nature to them which added so much color across the whole story。 The romance aspect played a minor role but I did appreciate how well it was tied to Lark’s confronting of her own personal issues and how each helped the other along as the story progressed。 I cant wait for the next book in the series。 。。。more

I found this a little strange when I started but soon got into it and it was good to read a fantasy book as I have not read one for a while。 It is not my favourite genre but I do like to mix up what I read。 This book mixes the inevitable background love story with a really interesting and fun fantasy novel。 I think I will read another one as it appears it is the first in a series

Brilliant readingExceptional reading, characters vivid and interesting。 Storytelling intoxicating and pulled me in from the first chapter。 Disliked the villain almost immediately。 If you like a bit of fantasy mixed with action and intrigue this is the book for you

HOW IS THIS BOOK NOT BLOWING UP YET?! The world building in this story was beautiful。 I felt actual longing to be a part of it。 The world within a world was so well done without being over complicated, nor vague。 The romance was sweet like milk chocolate with chili powder in it -- in all the best ways possible。 The cover design is gorgeous。 This was lyrical from start to finish and NEVER clunky。 I was engaged the entire way through。 So, SO well done。

This was a fun, romantic book with strong female characters and a handsome, wounded aristocrat whose only desire is to save his ruined kingdom from the hands of his despot stepfather。 Luckily, along comes Larkyra, a beautiful woman with magical abilities in her voice, who along with her similarly talented sisters, is pulled into his kingdom’s dealings by chance。

+ A very promising start, a rather interesting setting and some of my favourite tropes (arranged marriage; spying; male MC insecure about his scars with history of abuse)。- Lack of motivation behind character actions, childish behaviour, full of cliches, any sort of conflict magically resolving itself。

1。5 stars。 It started out VERY promising but it did not deliver on said promise。 The ending especially was one of the easiest and most deus ex machina endings I have ever come across。 Could it all have gone any smoother? Been any easier? The story was pointless。 What was its meaning? Does the book even have a theme? Also, plot??? I just finished the whole book and I could not tell you what it is。 Also, the flashbacks??? What for? I just finished the whole book and I could not tell you what it is。 Also, the flashbacks??? What for? They added nothing and there were too many of them。 From a crafts perspective, if you need a flashback every other chapter maybe you should reconsider where you start your story。 Flashbacks are the easy way out when trying to give depth to characters and explain their actions/emotions。 It’s much harder to intricately weave these explanations into the actual plot/story。 I was really annoyed by the author constantly choosing the easy way out。 The sisters behaved like pre-schoolers when together。 It was downright annoying。 I did not understand why or how the feelings between Larkyra and Darius blossomed。 Sure, Larkyra witnessed him being abused by his stepfather and she has a hero complex (and a theft kink, the explanation to which made zero sense)。 But what about Darius? Why does he find her enticing? Especially since he didn’t put two and two together until she literally told him about their chance encounter at the end of the book? What was the point of that whole thing? And what was the point of her confessing it to him when he was about to make his grand announcement at the end? It added absolutely nothing。 If it weren’t for the smut scene I would classify this whole thing as middle grade。 A poor man’s middle grade book。 And speaking of smut scene… it truly did not need to be there。 It added nothing。 And it wasn’t even well done。 And lastly, I am still left with the question of WHO THE FUCK IS THEIR ACTUAL FATHER? Is it Lord Bassette? Or is it the Tief King? What even is the Tief King? What does he do? What are his powers? What is that magical realm they seem to have access to? Are the Tief King and Lord Bassette the same person? Because if they are, then quite a few scenes in this book make exactly ZERO sense。 If they’re not, then there are plenty of other scenes that don’t make sense instead。 Who is Achak? What is their role? There were so many interesting things introduced at the beginning of the book and none of them were explored! This book had so much potential! This whole story started out strong but once it hit that 30% mark it was all downhill from there。 When I started reading it I was convinced it would be a 3 star read and I was so excited! But alas, I was disappointed。 The only reason it’s not a 1 star read is that the book I read prior to this one was much worse, and that I really really really liked the start of the first few chapters。 I was so intrigued at the start! 。。。more

Such a beautiful book! This was so well written, especially the dialogue。 I fell in love with each character instantly since the dynamics are so natural and the back and forth brought a smile to my face throughout the whole book。 Props to the author for not only creating well rounded, 3 dimensional characters, but also a developed villain who isn’t just evil for the sake of being evil。 The romance in this book was absolutely freaking adorable and I loved every second of it。
